I am often asked why I'm willing to train new Home Inspectors who will (and
have) gone on to become my competition.
I welcome competition
from my fellow Home Inspectors. However, it is disheartening to see that the playing field is anything but even and, the industry
continues to become fractured and polarized along petty lines. The industry as a whole puts very little energy into setting
a high bar for Home Inspectors. More time is spent squabbling over whether it's appropriate for Home Inspectors to market
to Realtors, rather than asserting the need for greater education and practical experience.
My point is, As an industry
stakeholder, I want my competition to be well trained, well mentored, and truly vested in the industry. The truth of
the matter is, anybody can hold themselves out as a Home Inspector. There is a considerable percentage
of Home Inspectors working in Ohio who are grossly under-qualified. Many have earned their "credentials' by
mail and have never set foot in a classroom. Let there be no mistake, Good Home Inspectors possesess an incredible
amount of knowledge and an unusual mix personal and professional skills. If you believe
you have the talent to compete with me, but lack the training, we can fix that.
There are schools such as AHIT, who ship instructors to Ohio from far away states. However,
I am the only Home Inspection teacher actively teaching and working in the Cleveland / Akron area. I lead formal Home Inspection coursework at Hondros College, a fully accredited college. My students are required
to grasp a wide range of building methodology, building science, and building failure issues. I am confident in saying, my
students are the best prepared "newbies" entering the business.
Students and current inspectors alike have taken advantage
of my Parallel Inspection program. Depending on the needs of the student, he or she will either accompany me on my inspections
(also called ride-alongs) or I may participate in inspections that they've originated. This relationship greatly benefits
the student, the clients. Fees for this service vary, but are only offered to established inspectors or new inspectors who
have received acceptable formal training.
